Did you know that before the year 1,000 A.D. there was no propitiation, and that what Jesus did on the cross had nothing to do with atoning for our sins? Well neither did we. But as emergent leader Tony Jones explains on his “I Think Your Atonement Might Be Wrong” video shared on his blog today, we’ve had it all wrong for the past thousand years.
Jones is the author of the book, A Better Atonement: Beyond the Depraved Doctrine of Original Sin. In an interview with Drew Sumrall of The Harvest Show, Jones confidently asserts that the penal substitution Paul writes about is really a modern idea:
Chris Rosebrough over at Pirate Christian Radio does an excellent job of deconstructing what Tony Jones is saying here. Check out this response over at Christian Research Network.
Jones isn’t the only emergent game changer to deny Christ’s atonement. Others like Brian McLaren and more recently Jay Bakker have done the same.
