Building a network of hope

by | Dec 20, 2012 | Best of!, Podcast

The next generation is facing a battle that you and I never could have imagined when we were teens. Have you seen the numbers?

  • 1 in 4 teens seriously contemplates suicide before graduating from high school
  • 1 in 6 is a “self-injurer” (cutting, burning, etc)
  • 1 in 6 will contract an STI (sexually transmitted infection)
  • 84% of teens want a closer relationship with their parents, but are unwilling to talk about their pains and fears with them.

Behind each statistic is a story left unfinished. And long after we’re gone, how will this generation be equipped and prepared to lead the Body of Christ in the decades ahead? Today we are going to talk about what today’s youth are facing, and then we’re going to offer some interesting solutions and hope. If you are a teen listening from home today or you are a parent or youth leader, these issues are front and center in your life. So how do you react in a time of crisis or reach teens before a crisis in your schools and youth groups?

The good news is that Christian ministries are starting to join forces to help all of us do just that.  Two of those ministries’ founding leaders are joining us today. On the phone with us from Colorado, Sean Dunn is the founder of a ministry called Groundwire, and in studio with us is Jeff Strommen, a youth pastor and head of a ministry called HopeNet 360. Jeff is also on staff here at the radio station. Both of these ministries are reaching youth, pointing them to the true hope we all have in Jesus. And they’re here to share how you can be a part of bringing that hope to our youth.
