There is a first time for everything, and now this: The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has made it possible for the first drag queen and king show on an American military base.
This past weekend, troops based at Okinawa’s Kadena Air Base in Japan put on a drag show featuring six openly gay service members. The homosexual soldiers in full drag attire danced and lip synced to “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.”
The 400-ticket show sold out immediately, and was well-received by the base attendees.
Just a few years ago, performances like these would have been unthinkable, and grounds for a possible discharge.
