I get the Catalyst newsletters and email alerts, so that I can keep an eye on what the world’s premiere Emergent Church conference series is up to. Because how our next generation of Christians is being trained in this realm is extremely important to me, and I think it should be to you, too. When our young leaders last year learned about Christian leadership principles by sitting at the feet of a non-Christian actor Rainn Wilson (Dwight Shrute of The Office), we need to ask why. When those young people also got a tutorial on how to go into a non-biblical, mystical New Age silence to hear from God, we also need to ask what in the world is going on? It’s because we’ve taken our eyes off Jesus once again, and put them on what we can do rather than on what He has done.
When you hear language like this, it ought to make you think a bit about what the Bible says about leadership:
I’m thinking we need to raise up followers who love Jesus, rather than “leaders who love the church.”
As for “how do we change internally,” well we don’t. He does that in us. When we try to be the change agent without the focus being on Christ and His Spirit, we put the emphasis on the wrong thing. The world already has leaders, and looking at Mark Driscoll’s self-destructing, crumbing empire it’s easy to see how we do that with our celeb pastors, don’t we? But very few have the humility to be followers of Jesus the way Paul was…and Peter….and so many others. We should look to them as examples of how to follow Christ, doncha think?
